The Apple Pencil Pro is in the hands of the first owners. Compatible with the iPad Air M2 and iPad Pro M4, it opens up a new world of possibilities that we didn’t think we needed until now. Apple only dedicated a few minutes of its presentation to the Apple Pencil Pro, and now that we have it with us, there’s a feature that’s wowing users.
The Apple Pencil Pro is able to create a virtual shadow out of thin air
One of the new functions of Apple Pencil Pro is your gyroscope. Thanks to it we can draw with different strokes and thicknesses depending on the inclination of the pencil. Just like with a traditional brush or pen. This in itself is quite surprising, since the Apple Pencil is able to know if we turn it on itself with millimeter precision.
The next step is the one that really causes a sensation on social networks like YouTube or X. The Apple Pencil casts a shadow on the iPad screen of the tool you have chosen. As if the light really came from above and was positioned on the canvas. Furthermore, When you turn the Apple Pencil, the shadow also adapts. User SnazzyLabs captured this perfectly in his latest post.

Little things that make the difference
That’s Apple: little things add up to a great product. Movements, functionalities… that the rest of the companies do not take into account but which, by using them, make you feel (and work) in a more complete and immersive way. This Apple Pencil example reminds me part of Steve Jobs’ bookwhere his father spent more time making the back part of the garden fence (and which no one would see) as beautiful as the front part.
I’m happy to see that this spirit of perfection remains at Apple. They didn’t need to do that, and the Apple Pencil would be just as great without it. However, they did it, and it’s also so subtle that the result is truly impressive.
Future compatibility of Apple Pencil Pro with visionOS?
This Apple Pencil Pro could be the first Pencil compatible with the Apple Vision Pro. Thanks to its gyroscope and its compatibility with the Search application, it would have the sufficient positioning to function perfectly with visionOS and be able to draw or take notes “in the air”. At WWDC we will have more information on this if this feature finally arrives, so on June 10 we will have to pay close attention to it.
