A small restriction in the tvOS operating system could be the main reason why video game developers don’t trust the platform
If we asked users in the Apple ecosystem what products they would like to see in the future, the most common answers would probably be a TV and a games console. It’s true that these are two of the highest-rated tech products in the industry. But… did you know that Apple already has a games console?
It’s like that, Apple TV is like a miniature game console
However, There is a small limitation in the Apple TV software which prevented many developers from integrating their most popular titles onto Apple’s small multimedia device.
Apple limits storage used by Apple TV apps
With the advent of iPhone emulators, which are now officially legal thanks to the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA), many users have wondered if any of these emulators could run on a Apple TV.
This was the case with the RetroArch emulator, available for iPhone and Apple TV. But the arrival of RetroArch in the tvOS App Store revealed a limitation of Apple’s software.
Apparently, users who tried RetroArch had their games deleted by the app itself. This is because there is a restriction in the Apple TV operating system that limits the amount of storage used by a tvOS app
The maximum size of an Apple TV app cannot exceed 4 GB. Additionally, Apple’s tvOS App Store documentation states that an Apple TV app can only permanently store 500 KB of data.
Notably, the latest generation of Apple TV 4K has a maximum storage configuration of 128 GB and a basic option of 64 GB. Hopefully in the future Apple will develop a device with larger storage to solve this small problem and eliminate this limitation.
This limitation has prevented many app developers from offering their big titles on the App Store or Apple Arcade. This means that the Apple TV could not become a small miniature video game console.
Add to that the fact that many developers are unhappy with Apple Arcade, and you get an explosive mix. While it is true that Apple can sometimes be a very demanding, harsh and restrictive company, it is also true that It’s precisely these types of limitations that make everything work as it should. and that user security remains impeccable.
