Is Star Citizen based on VR support from Half-Life: Alyx?

It has long been known that Star Citizen should get VR support. But the release of Half-Life: Alyx brought the topic back into the focus of the players.

Now a developer of the studio Cloud Imperium Games speaks up and reveals what virtual reality support for Star Citizen could look like – or should at least look according to his ideas.

What hurdles does VR have to overcome in Star Citizen?

Rendering just a VR image isn't the biggest challenge at work, according to the Junior Engine programmer with the alias Silvan-CIG. According to him, a good VR experience consists of much more than simply depicting the game in three dimensions.

Implementation not yet planned: There is currently no specific procedure for VR in Star Citizen. However, Silvan could imagine adding virtual reality to the game in phases. A first step would be, for example, to first activate VR support only in the hangar or in the cockpits of aircraft and vehicles.

Getting around may be the biggest problem: Getting around in VR is a completely unique challenge. In a multiplayer game like Star Citizen, it would be important for users to walk or run normally. A teleport function as it can be used optionally with Half-Life: Alyx is no longer available. But this creates new difficulties: How do you deal with motion sickness in a continuous movement? A question that definitely needs to be clarified before implementation.

Half-Life: Alyx as a role model: The fact that VR support is just as complex and extensive as in Half-Life: Alyx is, of course, a much larger construction site than "just" sitting in VR in the cockpit or walking around. Nevertheless, Silvan hopes to provide Star Citizen with a similarly complex VR support – and at least sets that as a personal goal.

No announcement and no promise: For example, he would like to be able to represent the entire body of the character in Star Citizen – and not just the hands, as is the case in Half-Life: Alyx. However, this is neither an official announcement nor a personal promise, as Silvan emphasizes in his blog post. How the VR implementation of Star Citizen will ultimately look has to become clear over time.

Star Citizen is still in an alpha phase. The release of version 3.9 is currently nearing. The planned VR support cannot yet be found on the current roadmap.
