Barely a few hours after its release, Paper Mario: The Millennium Door is being analyzed from all sides. And one of these discoveries points to the arrival of 4K

Paper Mario The Millennium Door has been examined in detail

Paper Mario: The Millennium Door released today on Nintendo Switch and is already being analyzed by players. In addition to the multiple comparisons with the original game (which already has translation changes), the game is even analyzed in terms of its architecture. On his personal blog, one of the players discovered something that he thought was worth sharing. A few hours later, it was the Nintendo Prime user who shared it on Twitter:

The Thousand Year Door codebase supports 4K resolution. The Nintendo Switch does not support 4K resolution. You can do the math, I’m sure! Via Necro Felipe, Mastodon

In fact, we observe three different pairs (v9; v10) in the shared image. They all form a very specific image resolution: 720p with 1280*720; 1080p (Full HD) with 1920*1080; but also 4K, since 3840*2160 is displayed. However, the higher the resolution, the better the display on the screen (since it contains more pixels).

4K for the next Switch? It’s not certain either

Such a discovery is exciting: the first shortcut we can come up with is to say that this Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door seems to be planned in 4K at some point. However, the current Nintendo Switch is not natively compatible with such a resolution (of course you could say). Then we immediately think of the next Nintendo console, which was recently officially announced by the company’s president himself. Two weeks ago, Shuntarô Furukawa explained :

This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will be making an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year.

The successor to the Nintendo Switch is available, but it will be a while before we get our hands on it. Only one announcement is planned for the current fiscal year (which ends on April 30th in Japan), but that by no means guarantees an immediate release of the new console. Likewise, it is not certain today whether the little sister of the Switch can display 4K natively. The discovery shared above would only facilitate porting multiple games in 4K to another console… but not necessarily the next one.
