Inside Out 2the sequel to Pixar’s incredibly clever take on the voices in our heads, hits theaters on June 14. In case you’re not familiar, the first film embodied the emotions of a teenager named Riley as five colorful people in her head. The whole thing was based on interpreting concepts of the mind, like the “train of thought,” literally, but with a lot of comedic flair and inventiveness. The sequel expands on that idea with new emotions and situations for Riley to deal with, and a new character seems a no-brainer for Kingdom Hearts IV.
Full film (above GamesRadar) recently stopped by Pixar to watch the first 30 minutes of the upcoming sequel, and learn more about some of the new characters and concepts it introduces. For example, Riley’s inner world features a treasure trove where she hides her deepest, darkest secrets. Inside it, among other things, is a video game character named Lance Slashblade, who Riley had a crush on when she was younger. And Riley, I’m telling you now: You might be embarrassed by this shit as a teenager, but when you’re in your 20s and 30s and getting dangerously online, you’re going to flaunt your thirst for fictional characters like the rest of us. Acknowledge it early.
Lance is described as Final Fantasy-style swordsman who is prone to disruption and has been compared to Keanu Reeves’ Duke Caboom by Toy Story 4 as providing a similar kind of comic relief.
“When you’re a teenager and you don’t have any dates, you start to fall in love. And sometimes it’s not just people, it’s cartoon characters,” said director Kelsey Mann. Full film. “This is from experience! Or video game characters. We thought, ‘Oh, that would be so great. Riley could have a crush on a video game character. We could animate that character like it’s from a video game and give it that look – that pixelated look.’ We thought, ‘This could be really fun and hopefully something that a lot of people can relate to.'”
The Final Fantasy Comparison is enough to get my thoughts going about how this character might appear in Kingdom Hearts IV. The Pixar levels were some of the best parts of Kingdom Hearts IIISo it is not impossible that Sora has a from the inside to the outside world in his next adventure. Lance would be a pretty reasonable party member if Heartless appeared in Riley’s mind. One can imagine scenes where they start influencing Riley’s emotions and actions in the real world, and it’s up to Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Lance to help even things out. It writes itself, folks. Even if Sora doesn’t become a from the inside to the outside world, Lance could easily be a summon to help our hero in battle.
At this point it is still unclear when Kingdom Hearts IV comes out. Where will it Rank compared to other games in the franchise? That remains to be seen, but soon more people will play the whole series, as almost all games will be released on Steam on June 13th.
