There are crimes that seem so well planned that it seems justice will never be served. Amy Molloy is a 25-year-old British girl who was recently sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding elderly people into spending on Apple products. But the technique he used was quite daring: he made elderly people believe that he had a package for them, he asked them for their credit card. With this data, He went shopping at the nearest Apple store.
The purchases piled up and in total he managed to scam more than 150,000 dollars. However, he will now have to honor his debt to society by going to prison for two years, in addition to returning what he stole. There are many other people’s friends out there and we need to be alert to possible scams like this. That was the procedure.
A scam involving dozens of cards
In the official statement, North Yorkshire Police explain that it all started in December 2021, when Molloy contacted an 86-year-old man who he convinced should take his credit card. He took out 300 dollars from an ATM to see if it worked, and then spent 8,000 more on Apple products. With that, you could have bought 10 sets of wheels for the Mac Pro, for example.
He later contacted a 70-year-old woman who he said belonged to his bank. He explained that his card was wrong and that he had to take it with him. He then used it to also spend 8,200 dollars on products Manzana. Who knows what he took. He then used the card to make other purchases at Apple, the amount of which is unknown. Little by little, she improved her technique, changing areas and choosing other victims so as not to get caught. Until justice finally comes.
Finally, and How could it be otherwise, they ended up chasing her. And she followed the prosecutor’s recommendation, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison. Detective Constable Neil Brodhurst, from North Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit, who led the investigation, said:
“Molly decided to attack some of the most vulnerable people in our society, the elderly, to benefit economically. He traveled from county to county, committing crimes from one area to another. “This investigation shows that there are no borders and we will actively pursue criminals who travel across the country to commit crimes.”
Data theft prevention is in our hands
As citizens, it is important that we be alert to such cases. This may seem ridiculous to most of us and it would never happen to us. On the other hand, there are more and more counterfeits and scams linked to data theft (phishing), but it is important to keep a cool head and not get carried away by any alarmist message, being particularly careful with strangers.
We are all more or less clear that we should not give the card to anyone in whom we do not have absolute trust. However, criminals target older people who don’t understand much about this because they know they are more vulnerableand we need to explain these things to them and help them prevent this from happening to them.
