As is well known, EA did not renew the FIFA license and is now calling its game EA Sports FC. Now rumors are surfacing that 2K has secured the license and a first game is already in the starting blocks.
During the whole wrangling over the FIFA license, which Electronic Arts allegedly refused to renew for another four years due to excessive financial demands of $2.5 billion from the football organization, there were plenty of bold statements by FIFA President Infantino at the time that there would be new FIFA games from another developer.
It now seems as if there is something to it, as rumors are currently circulating that 2K has secured the FIFA license. Retailer MohPlay’s reference to an upcoming FIFA 2K25 is confirmed by Mike Straw of Insider Gaming, who claims that an announcement could be made soon, but none of his sources would comment on the matter.
It’s not entirely impossible. 2K would have the necessary funds to acquire the license and is quite experienced in sports games. After all, 2K has been bringing licensed ice hockey and football series to market for years in competition with EA and is currently still strongly represented with NBA 2K and WWE, even though the other series have been abandoned.
For football games in general, a new competitor could be a real boost, especially since Konami is no longer really involved and has found its own niche with its free-to-play title eFootball. In any case, EA has not been harmed by the loss of the license – the new series, which started last year with EA Sport FC 24, was able to surpass its direct predecessor FIFA 23 in terms of player numbers.
So far, the rumor of a FIFA 2K25 should be treated with extreme caution, as there have been no official statements or announcements from either 2K or FIFA. Perhaps we will see something concrete in June, the traditional month of announcements with various events and the Summer Game Fest.
