Astro is a stupid little guy.

One of the best surprises from Sony’s State of Play presentation today was the announcement of a new Astro Bot Game. Astro’s PlayroomThe pack-in game that was installed on PlayStation 5s in 2020 was a delightful platform game that honored PlayStation’s history, the technology of DualSense controllerand it was fun to play. Now we get another one from Team Asobi, which is simply titled: Astro Bot.

The game leaked earlier this monthand many of the details from the leak turned out to be true. Astro Bot includes a Fennec robot character that accompanies Astro as he travels through various environments. Astro also flies around on a DualSense controller at some point, so I’m assuming he’s probably controlled via motion controls. Oh, there’s also a PlayStation 5 spaceship. Wait, Kratos just gave Astro his axe? Oh, it looks like he’s teaming up with a bunch of different PlayStation characters. This shit is awesome. Game of the Year contender, you heard that here first. Unlike Astro’s Playroomit looks like Astro Bot will be released as a video game box and will be on store shelves from September 6th.

Playstation

Astro comes from The play roomanother tech demo experience for the PlayStation 4, which was released alongside the system in 2013. This was followed by Playroom VRwhich served the same purpose in 2016, but for the PlayStation VR headset. The character finally got a game of the same name with the excellent Astro Bot Rescue Mission in 2018 exclusively for PlayStation VR. Astro’s Playroom was the first full-fledged game starring Astro that didn’t require a peripheral, and it was a hit, so it’s nice to see the little guy getting a new game.
