The best things must come to an end and the world of Japanese manga/animation is no exception. The coming months promise the conclusion of many successful works, be it One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen… or even My Hero Academia, whose author has announced that he will still be working on the conclusion.

My Hero Academia: An ending that relates more to the title?

There is still some value in following your favorite manga in Japan week after week. Each of them is published in a magazine, with a chapter appearing in a weekly issue (though some are published monthly). When magazines devote the majority of their columns to the chapters themselves, they often include cross-interviews or just words from the mangaka in question. For the latest issue of Weekly Shônen Jump (a must-have One piecefrom Boruto…), it was Kohei Horikoshi who responded. The author of My Hero Academiaa very popular manga whose animated adaptation is currently running with a seventh season, explains that he ultimately decided to postpone the ending of the manga.

Writing conventions dictate that the conclusion of a story must be brief, but this isn’t the kind of manga that can end immediately after the battles are over, so I’ll keep going for a while. We’ll return to the title.

It’s hard to understand what he means by returning to the title. The theories are already going well: the battles are over, that is, the “hero” part gives way to the “academy” part. Enough to remember, however, that it is actually the main character who tells his story, and that the entire manga revolves around how UA became “his hero academy.”

A slow ending

An epilogue that remains in sight, as Kohei Horikoshi simply wants to heal his exit. However, it has been postponed for several months. Originally, in the release of volume 38, the author had indicated that the next volume would be equivalent to the fall of the curtain:

Next volume! The story will reach its final stage. It’s time to finish many battles! Look forward to all of that! -Kohei Horikoshi

The calculation is quickly done: My Hero Academia then it should end around September 2023. However, we are in June 2024 and the conclusion does not seem to be quite within reach yet. The perfect opportunity to enjoy the animated adaptation available on Crunchyroll without knowing what the ending will be.
