Summer Game Fest is held every June. This year is no different, with the Summer Game Fest presentation taking place in just 4 days. Plenty of video game companies participate in the festivities, which include sharing news during a presentation or participating in a media-only and influencer event known as the Summer Game Fest Play Days. The latter always follows the same weekend when the presentation took place.
However, despite this quickly becoming an annual thing, Nintendo had very little presence. A big reason for this lies in Nintendo’s preference for Nintendo Direct over it, which usually happens in the same month. Nintendo has already confirmed that a general Nintendo Direct will take place this month.
Additionally, Summer Game Fest creator and host Geoff Keighley recently held a Q&A on Twitch, where he was asked about Nintendo’s involvement in the event. Nintendo has always been welcome to participate, with Keighley even stating that he and the rest of the team “always hope it’s the right year for them to come and get involved,” but Nintendo has yet to do so. You can see Keighley’s remarks on the matter in full below.
“Nintendo has never been a big part of Summer Game Fest before, we always hope that it will be the right year for them to come and get involved, but that hasn’t happened yet. It’s nice to have a few announcements from companies, but it’s nice to spread things out in different places. They kind of need their own thing to support all that stuff, it’s an ever-evolving landscape. You know, Summer Game Fest isn’t just a two-hour show, it’s actually an entire period of time. We don’t claim those events, those companies do those events, but we’re trying to bring it all together so the audience can kind of go through all those announcements.”
