Destiny 2: The Final Shape has been available since Tuesday, with initial server problems. But that doesn’t change the fact that players are obviously excited about the saga finale.
On Tuesday evening, Destiny 2: The Final Shape didn’t get off to the best start. Aside from a not exactly short list of “Known Issues,” the player feedback included plenty of server problems and error codes. But the fans’ curiosity was apparently big enough to bring many players back and help the game flourish again, at least on Steam.
Already in April, with the launch of the last content update Into the Light, the number of players had risen again somewhat; at least on Steam, after weak previous months, around 100,000 players were playing Destiny 2 at the same time. On the launch evening on Tuesday, the number even climbed to a very strong 314,000, just missing the maximum value since the Steam launch – despite all the server problems and certainly contributing to them.
The reactions to The Final Shape are accordingly mixed. After a lot of bashing because of the technical issues, the trend is more positive now that the game is more stable, and quite a few people describe The Final Shape as a very good or even the best campaign to date.
We’re almost at the end of the campaign, as another maintenance is preventing us from finishing the story. Our first impression is still a bit mixed. Apart from the somewhat long-winded “we’re getting the band back together” story with brutal fights (unfortunately more arena-style than open-world), we’re disappointed so far by the prism focus imposed by certain enemy types, which doesn’t allow for any other ways of playing in the missions. Hopefully the finale will pick up a bit more momentum.
The Final Shape is definitely better than the disappointing Lightfall, especially since it includes many important Destiny characters. But there is still room for improvement. Hopefully we’ll have more on that in our review soon, if Bungie and the servers let us.
One week before the release of Destiny 2: The Final Form, here is the launch trailer for the add-on to get you in the mood.
