One of the most impressive games at this year’s Summer Game Festival, and certainly the highlight of the Devolver Direct, was Tenjutsu Tenjutsu is the new game from former Dead Cells designer and director Sebastien Benard.

Benard went out on his own as Deepnight Games, and his new game was born out of a game development contest.

The look and general flow of Tenjutsu should be familiar to fans of Dead Cells, albeit from a different perspective. It’s a top-down rogue-lite fighting game with a heavy emphasis on martial arts and kung fu.

You play as a misguided former gangster bent on bringing down the powerful crime families that rule the city. There are four of them, and you need to take them all down – but you can do it in any order. In true roguelite style, Tenjutsu features a fluid martial arts combat system that also incorporates an array of weapons, and offers a host of upgrades and new fighting techniques.

There’s also a neat twist where the longer you gear up and prepare, the stronger your enemies will become. The trailer doesn’t explain how this works, but the game doesn’t sound far from that, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out more.

In the meantime, watch the stylish trailer below, and try out the original game jam project that inspired it on itch.io Tenjutsu is in development for PC and consoles.
