Apple is once again involved in controversy due to the rejection of the UTM application, a PC emulator which sought to be present on iOS and iPadOS
We believed that all existing emulators would be available sooner or later on the App Store or through alternative stores. Those from Cupertino rejected the developers of the UTM applicationAnd PC emulator for iPhone and iPad. A change in the retro console emulator rule encouraged said developers to submit their app, but Apple relies on the fact that a PC is not a console
Apple’s rules indicate coverage of emulators but there is a guideline that is unclear
According to UTM, those of Cupertino They did not legalize the app due to a violation of rule 4.7. of Apple’s application review. This rule states that they cover “mini-apps, mini-games, streaming games, chatbots, add-ons and game emulators”..
With curiosity, This rule is not included in the UTM review as part of the rejection. Looking only at the notarization section, the rule says it’s not enforceable, so Apple may have made a mistake by rejecting an app that didn’t deserve it.
This is a bit strange since some emulators rely on operating systems to work out of the box, although they fulfill the purpose of rule 4.7 of being an emulator.
UTM will not appeal Apple’s decision, they will continue to be available in the traditional way
Another important point is that the UTM version submitted for review had the JIT compiler disabled. This compiler cannot be present in applications distributed on iOS, except in authorized alternative navigation engines.
This may have been an internal warning within UTM as functions and performance were affected.. The version without JIT was an SE version.
Given what happened, The developers have stated that they will not make a second attempt to bring this experience to iOS and iPadOS.. So it will be available like AltStore used to be.
You will have to install the application manually using Xcode as support. While for Mac, Users interested in this PC system emulator can use it by downloading it from the Mac App Store or via its website.
