One way to ensure a favorite show or movie never drops out of the streaming rotation? Buy a physical copy. On Monday, animation distributor GKIDS announced that fans of Netflix’s League of Legends series Arcane That opportunity will soon arise, with Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray releases planned for later this year.
While Arcane elaborated background stories for well-known League of Legends The animated series starring characters Vi and Jinx triumphed on Netflix thanks to a tenuous connection to familiar lore and an emphasis on stylish action and dramatic character work. Produced by French animation studio Fortiche for Riot Games, the series was a huge hit for the streamer, garnering over 34 million hours of viewers in its first week. Details are scarce on what GKIDS might pack in a physical release, but the initial announcement promises “a full lineup of products later this year, from digital to premium editions, including a 4K version exclusive to home entertainment release.” But in an unusual tone for a Blu-ray licensing agreement, the folks at GKIDS seem overjoyed to make a physical edition of the series possible. The news came at the Annecy International Animation Festival, where the distributor also acquired the rights to Science Sarus anime Dan Da Dan
“We are MONSTER fans of [Arcane],” said GKIDS founder and CEO Eric Beckman in a statement, “and our team is having a blast working with the creatives at Riot and Fortiche to put together an amazing package for fans. This project was conceived on the lakeside lawn in Annecy, so we are especially excited to announce this collaboration at the festival and the true home of animation.”
There is no word on when Arcane Season 1 will be released on Blu-ray, but GKIDS promises more announcements will follow later this year.
