Netflix’s animated adaptation of League of Legends, Arcane, is getting a physical release soon, and it’s all thanks to GKIDS.
One of the most frustrating things about Netflix is that most of the content it produces has never been released on DVD or Blu-ray. This is obviously because the streaming service wants as many people to subscribe as possible, but it does make keeping hold of certain series a bit of a hassle. I do have some good news on the physical media side of Netflix shows, though, as GKIDS announced yesterday that it has acquired worldwide home entertainment rights to Arcane Season 1. In a press release (via Polygon), GKIDS didn’t offer a lot of details, but it did say it plans to “release the full series later this year, from digital to premium editions, including a 4K version exclusive to home entertainment.”

This is obviously great news for fans of the first season, as it means they can easily loop the series without having to worry about network conditions or paying Netflix monthly. GKIDS founder and CEO Eric Beckman said in a statement at the Annecy International Animation Festival: “We are fans of MONSTER. [Arcane]. Our team is extremely excited to be working with the creatives at Riot and Fortiche to produce an amazing piece of work for the fans. This project was conceived on the lawns by Lake Annecy, so we are extremely happy to announce this collaboration at the festival and true home of animation.”

GKIDS has been making a lot of moves on the physical distribution front lately. For starters, the upcoming Science Saru installment Dan Da Dan is coming to theaters and home theaters, and it also acquired North American rights to the very strange Angel’s Egg, a lesser-known film from Ghost in the Shell director and acclaimed Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano.
Arcane Season 2 is also set to launch later this year, so fans of the series will definitely have a lot to look forward to.
