Although The Boys creator Eric Kripke recently said he wouldn’t commit to a specific number, he has confirmed that season five will be the show’s last.

Just the other week, Kripke said he didn’t want to reveal how many seasons The Boys would have, mostly because of how wrong he was about Supernatural, but now he’s announced on his personal Twitter account that season five will actually be the final one. “Season 4 premiere week is a great time to announce: Season 5 will be the final one!” he tweeted. “This was always the plan, I just had to proceed with caution until I got final approval from Vought. So excited to build the story to its bloody, epic, wet climax. Watch Season 4 in two days, because the end has already begun!”

Kripke also revealed the news to Entertainment Weekly, saying he was “so happy to finally be able to execute the five-season plan,” jokingly referencing his own unsuccessful attempt to execute the five-season plan on Supernatural. “It’s very exciting to me.” Kripke explained why he set a hard cap, saying, “Part of it is that the writers are so outlandish, but three plus five is the magic number for writing. Movie performances are three, TV performances are five. Jokes are three plus five. Five seemed like a good round number. It’s enough to tell the story, but also enough to climax it without it getting boring. It was hard because I hadn’t been able to tell everyone yet. I’m glad to finally be able to let everyone know.”

Of course, you die-hard fans out there might be worried that this is the end of The Boys’ universe. Kripke went on to tell Entertainment Weekly, “The Boys story doesn’t continue. With any luck, Generation Five will continue, and hopefully a couple of other things we’re talking about in development will continue, but The Boys story ends with Season 5.” Earlier this year, it was reported that a series set in Mexico had begun development, and Generation Five was renewed for a second season less than a month after its premiere, so no matter which way you look at it, there’s definitely more to come in this messed-up, badass world of superheroes.
