“The remake landscape has evolved”
In the past, Ubisoft Forward we received some pretty disappointing news: The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has once again been delayed until 2026.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was first presented in 2020, so four years later, hearing that there are still two years to go is a bit disappointing. There is, however, a good reason for this, since Ubisoft Montreal became the main development studio for the project in 2022, succeeding Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune.
In an interview this week, creative director Adam Granger and game director Michael McIntyre explained that The pre-production phase of the game has been completed and full production has begun:
Michael McIntyre: “We have completed our pre-production phase. “We are now in full production, which means we have built a small version of the game that has allowed us to validate many of our ambitions with the remake.”
“The remake landscape has evolved a lot since the Sands of Time remake began. There have been some really good games that have clearly redefined the bar. We made big changes to the 3Cs (character, camera, controls) and had to prototype to make sure our new controls still fit the old gameplay, so sometimes we have to modify them. It’s a little faster in terms of design, but in terms of production, there is no difference between creating a remake or an original game. It takes time, know-how and people, which is why we have reinforcements from other studios to help us here.
It seems that Ubisoft Montreal started practically from scratch when it took over the project, so naturally, it takes a while to bring this remake to market. Remember that the game had a release date for 2021.
