Meta confirmed the suspend the training of your Artificial Intelligence systems using user data from platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, after pressure from the Irish Data Protection Commissioner (DPC). The move means that Meta’s AI services will not launch in European Union countries, at least for now.
The announcement comes after the DPC made a request to Meta, on behalf of the rest of European data protection organizations, so the company did not include the personal information of European citizens in the training of its AI models. In turn, the request was made after several public appeals from privacy organizations in Europe, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Ireland.
Meta accepted the DPC’s request not to train its AI using Facebook and Instagram user data, its two major social networks used by millions of people in the European Union. However, the company expressed “disappointment” with the Irish request, as it said it had already incorporated several requests from European data protection organizations and had been informed of the upcoming launch.
Additionally, Meta announced that due to this pause in its program, its Artificial Intelligence services They will not be broadcast in European countries, at least for now. The reason is that this type of applications based on Artificial Intelligence require a huge amount of data to obtain accurate and relevant results for the user; Without this data, the experience “would be second-rate” according to the company, especially compared to other AI already available. Although Meta did not mention its competitors, Google’s ChatGPT and Gemini already operate in the EU and are capable of displaying relevant information to the user.
