Genmoji is one of the new features of Apple Intelligence. During a WWDC 2024 session, Apple offers more details on how it works
Among the AI news at Apple presented during the main event of WWDC 2024, there is a content generation detail that caught attention like Genmoji. This is a feature that will allow you to create emojis using generative AI. This is part of Apple Intelligence and is not yet available in the first developer beta of iOS 18. However, those in Cupertino offered additional information during a session this week.
What is Genmoji for Apple?
Apple’s definition of emojis is “unique bitmaps that are not described by the Unicode text character.” This means that Genmoji will not be limited in its use. They don’t look like already defined emojis and can only be used in messaging apps.
The most interesting thing for developers is that Apple will make a new API available so you can use Genmoji and other graphics as if it were a standard emoji. This means that any app that supports rich text will be able to use Genmoji. The name of the API in question is NSAdaptiveImageGlyph.
According to Apple, it works with a standard aspect ratio with a square aspect ratio that will support different resolutions. It can be combined with text and can also be sent as stickers.
Will it be compatible if shipped to other devices such as Android and PC?
Everything is very beautiful and spectacular at Apple with the Genmoji. But what about other platforms? Apple detailed during its WWDC session that Genmoji takes into account the flaws that exist in terms of compatibility when shared on other platforms. It can be replaced with a similar emoji and in applications where rich text is not supported, a textual representation of the emoji can be read.
What will be the best option to send Genmoji to other non-Apple users? We believe that converting your Genmoji into a sticker This would be the best option to convey what you have created at any given time. Imagine your Genmoji is based on a photo of you, a Unicode emoji couldn’t replace the essence of your face.
It will be interesting How will other competing brands react? in front of the Genmoji. Will they create their own AI-powered emoji system? The presentation of Genmoji as a session at WWDC 2024 lasts approximately 11 minutes and explains, in addition to compatibility, how the API works, how Genmoji adapts to any developer’s application and other technical details.
