Our Verdict
A fantastic “one-stop shop” for iPhone (and Android) device management, Dr. Fone is less of a data recovery tool and more of a Swiss Army knife with potential – if you’re willing to pay for every feature.
If you need to recover lost data on your iPhone, there are a number of best data recovery apps for iPhone, Dr Fone being one of them, however, calling Dr Fone a “data recovery app » is a bit abusive. .
This is because Dr. Fone is packed with features. Some are very useful, some are quite useful, and some won’t be very useful at all, but the exact categories each falls into depends largely on user intent.
Luckily, you can just buy the things you want or need from Dr. Fone’s tool directory, which means that while it might cost you $100 for the whole kit and kaboodle, it’s worth also the detour for each of its individual pieces.
First impressions

I admit that Dr. Fone did not do his best during my tests. For one, it took a few attempts to get the Mac app to connect to my iPhone (connected to my Mac via USB-C), while displaying what appeared to be a broken pop-up that I simply couldn’t close.
I started to wonder if installing it was a mistake, but I persevered – and I’m glad I did.
With a host of tools and an overview of your connected devices on the left side of the screen, it’s easy to navigate around Dr. Fone’s interface. This is pretty standard in terms of modern apps, but I was impressed by the replication of the app icons on the sidebar to make it easy to know where I needed to look.
Features of Dr. Fone

As I mentioned before, there are a whole host of features here. The “Toolbox” menu is essentially your starting point and offers the ability to remove Apple ID and locks, spoof your GPS location for games like Pokemon Go, and transfer Whatsapp data to other devices .
There is also a way to copy data to a new phone, erase that data, or recover phone passwords. Remember that whatever you do, you’ll need to plug in your phone, unlock it, and trust your computer before you can do anything.

Nonetheless, we’re here for data recovery, and I was impressed by how deep into my deleted files and data the app could reach. I saw WhatsApp images of chats going back years, messages I was able to recover and much more.
This is impressive, even with a few performance issues that I’ll address shortly. There are a few deals currently available, so the whole package will cost you $99.95/£78.86 per year (usually $139.95/£110.42) or $115.95/£91.48 on the package perpetual (usually $162.95/£128.57). Note that tax is added at point of sale, as is a ‘download insurance service’ which includes a 24-month warranty ($4.95/£3.91), the latter of which can be waived. Without insurance, the perpetual license currently costs $139.14/£109.78.
However, you can save money by simply purchasing access to Data Recovery for $59.95/£47.30 per year (usually $68.95/£54.40), or $69.95 /£55.19 (usually $63.08) as a one-time fee, and it works on up to five devices. Again, tax is added at point of sale, as is insurance, so the price in the UK is actually £66.23 for the perpetual license, and £56.76 for the license annual.
Dr. Fone’s Troubles
Foundry
I think Dr. Fone is an excellent piece of software, but it sometimes feels like it’s creaking under the weight of its ambition.
Once installed, it will open smaller applications to process your individual requests. The Data Recovery Tool, for example, appears in its own app, but those apps can be a little finicky.
On more than one occasion, the Data Recovery Tool crashed on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro during the initial scan, so I would definitely recommend letting it do its job. For me, the initial scan took about 80 minutes, but I was impressed with what it was able to extract.
The essential
Considered purely as a data recovery device, Dr. Fone is an impressive piece of software that comes with a range of extras that you may not need.
Considered an all-in-one toolbox, it is impressive and expensive. Your mileage will vary, but to recover that lost file or deleted photo, you can purchase each feature piecemeal.
