If you’ve taken a look at the Early Access of Hades 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, here’s a very interesting new feature for the latter that you might really enjoy.

While we wait for the arrival of ultimate functionality in the next and final patch of Baldur’s Gate 3, this one offers a brand new game mode that will surely please fans of Hades 2 and other games in the genre. A refreshing experience for Larian Studios’ masterpiece that is definitely worth a detour.

Baldur’s Gate 3 goes roguelike with a brand new game mode

Even though mods are not yet officially supported on Baldur’s Gate 3, GOTY 2023 is already benefiting enormously from the creativity of its community. This is especially the case with Trials of Tav, a mod developed by Hippo0o that offers an innovative and very refreshing experience on the much-acclaimed RPG from Larian Studios (although only on the PC version). The game focuses solely on the excellent turn-based combat and includes a nice layer of roguelike that fans of titles in the genre such as the recent Hades 2 or The Rogue Prince of Persia will certainly not deny.

This allows us to face increasingly stronger waves of enemies depending on the level of our group. After each wave, we receive more or less rare loot, as well as currency that we can spend to obtain powerful bonuses. The mod includes more than 250 enemies, 38 maps and promises more than a hundred hours of fun alone… but also with friends! For the more experienced, a New Game+ is also integrated.

How to play this challenging and fascinating mod

If you want to test this new unofficial Baldur’s Gate 3 game mode, you can download it Trials of the Tav on Nexus Mods. However, for it to work, you must use the mod Norbytes Script Extender. Once both are installed, Hippo0o recommends starting your creation from a fresh backup, as if you perform a save that is already well underway, you risk causing major problems with your progress.

When you start a new game (the modder recommends doing this on Honor Mode, the highest difficulty level in the game), Trials of Tav will ask you if you want to play it. If you click “No,” the game will start as normal, with the mod not installing. Only by starting it will the game mode be fully active. Hippo0o also recommends building your party from recruitable characters rather than Origin characters like Astarion, Karlach, or Shadowheart, which don’t seem to work properly. You’re now armed with the knowledge you need to make the most of the experience if the prospect of playing Baldur’s Gate 3 roguelike-style tempts you.
