The digital certificate has paved the way for the installation of several government applications that allow access to personal information in public administrations and manage processes that are generally quite slow. NOW The government presented the digital walleta mobile application which will be used to verify the age of minors.
The objective of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Civil Service is limit access of minors to adult content platforms. Minister José Luis Escriva recalled that the age of access for the first time to this type of content is between 9 and 11 years old, and that almost three out of four adolescents consume it regularly.
The Beta Digital Wallet mobile app will be available at the end of summer
And it is important to understand this better system that will be used to identify the user on adult content sites:
- The pack contains 30 completely anonymous identifiers with the letter K as a sign of the user’s age of majority.
- When the user accesses the website, a QR code will be generated on the screen.
- The user will need to read the code with the Beta Digital Wallet app.
- The system consists of double authentication: renewal of the 30 identifiers and QR code system.
The rationale for the set of 30 credentials is to prevent Websites can trace user identities when browsing various websites. This means that when the identifier is issued, the link between the “keyset” and the specific person is destroyed so that traceability remains within the application.
Credentials are renewed from within the app
There are two important points– An ID can only be used three times maximum on each platform and an expiration period of 30 days is set for these keys. Once expired, the user must re-identify their legal age with the Beta Digital Wallet application.
This application is based on the European eIDAS2 standard which establishes that from October 2027, content platforms will have to accept the use of digital identity wallets. In this case, according to Escriva, Europe is ahead of future implementation and platforms are being asked to “move forward” as well.
Digital transformation poses a whitelist system for adult content platforms to identify themselves and will be managed by the State Secretary for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure, another list of verification applications managed by the State Secretary for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence and a third for securities issuers of skills.
The application will be available at the end of summer and technical specifications available on the Website so that they can be consulted by the platforms that must adhere so that the user can identify with the Beta Digital Wallet application.
This system, already announced at the beginning of the year and based on the European eIDAS2 standard, will also be available on other platforms such as messaging applications or social networks to identify the user’s age; Several countries such as the United Kingdom are already considering the possibility of closing access to social networks or even the sale of smartphones to minors.
