Sega hasn’t shown anything about its Crazy Taxi reboot yet, but it’s apparently going to be open-world and massively multiplayer.
When you think of Crazy Taxi, you almost certainly think of the odd scene where you saw the game in an arcade and thought “Yeah, I spent a few quid on it but ended up not being able to play it well, because who has money for arcade games?” You probably also don’t think of it as just a quirky arcade game, because that’s what it is. But it’s been 17 years since the last non-mobile version of the classic racing series, so it sounds like the upcoming reboot of Crazy Taxi is skipping some trends and going straight to what everyone is doing these days: open worlds and multiplayer.

Yes, as spotted by Automaton, in an interview posted on the Sega of Japan YouTube channel today, series producer Kenji Kanno talked about the upcoming game, which he said is being developed as a “completely new” Crazy Taxi that can be played by many people at the same time. Obviously, some areas are still being worked out on the specifics, and multiplayer is still in the testing phase, but the ultimate goal is to retain those classic Crazy Taxi shenanigans while introducing new mechanics. In addition to the realistic cities, areas such as a theme park-style map and a map inspired by the West Coast of the United States are also being developed.

The job page for the game also lists a number of positions, noting that Sega wants the reboot to be a hit, which is why Sega calls the game an open-world and massively multiplayer game – the developer has previously said it wants the game to be a AAA title, so it sounds nothing like an arcade game. Personally, I’m not sure if Crazy Taxi will be well received as a multiplayer game, but stranger things have happened. In the meantime, we can only wait for Sega to show more.
