House cleaning at Electronic Arts – three parts of the Battlefield series are being removed from the stores and the servers will not be online for much longer, at least on two platforms.
When online games get old and nobody is playing them anymore, it is time to pull the plug. In a Statement on X/Twitter Electronic Arts has now announced that this fate awaits three parts of the Battlefield series.
As of July 31, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline will disappear from the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 stores. All three games will then no longer be available for purchase, and the same applies to any additional content and DLCs.
And the online services for these games are also being shut down. According to EA, the servers will be shut down on November 7, meaning the online content will no longer be accessible. EA emphasizes that owners of the game will still be able to play the single-player content without restrictions.
The sunset only affects the two platforms. Battlefield 3 will continue to be playable on PC. Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline will continue to be available for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Today’s announcement has no impact on these titles and platforms.
This marks the end of a real era, at least on consoles, as Battlefield 3 is still considered the best and most popular part of the series. The game was released in October 2011, almost 13 years ago, and quickly worked its way into the hearts of fans thanks to its fantastic graphics (at least on the PC) and great gameplay. Thanks to its popularity, the game received a whopping five DLCs by March 2013.
