Eurogamer managed to catch up with the head of the Sonic team, Takashi Iizuka, to ask him all about the company’s upcoming Sonic x Shadow Generations, which comes out this October. One of the main discussions was around the Shadow Generation levels and how they would contrast with Sonic’s levels. Iizuka teased that the Shadow Generations level design will feature “a lot of iconic moments from Shadow’s past in the new gameplay” as the team really “wanted to tell a new story using a lot of these familiar locations to really introduce Shadow as a character to players who may not have gotten the full backstory of the character .”
“For the Shadow Generations level design, the team is making sure that the levels are fundamentally created to be similar to the Generations-style level design with lots of high-speed action platforming that also includes additional features that work when Chaos Control is used,” he said. he says. “From there, they continue to build on the level design through iteration to add things that can also be done with the new Doom Powers, so not only can you run through traditional Generations-style gameplay, but also find new things to do with Chaos Control and Cursed Powers .”
Just don’t expect any “Classic Shadow” levels like Sonic, though Shadow’s perspective will occasionally shift to 2D. Levels will also be taken from all of Shadow’s appearances in the games, “featuring many iconic moments from Shadow’s past in the new gameplay,” says Iizuka. “We wanted to tell a new story using a lot of these familiar locations to really introduce Shadow as a character to players who may not have gotten the character’s full backstory, as it’s happened in a number of different titles, and we also felt confident that this single title could do the right thing Shadow as a character and highlight some of the important moments in Shadow’s history.”
