If recent reports are accurate, you might soon be able to play Final Fantasy 14 in the palm of your hand.
Final Fantasy 14 is clearly one of the most popular MMOs out there, but it wasn’t until this year that the game was released on Xbox. Prior to that, the game was only available on PC or PlayStation, but with Square Enix now adopting a multi-platform strategy for its blockbuster titles, it seems only a matter of time before Final Fantasy 14 comes to other platforms. According to Exposer, the next platform could be mobile devices, as Square Enix and tech giant Tencent are reportedly working together to make a mobile version of the popular MMO. It’s unclear how far along the project is, just that the two companies are working together, but it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if a mobile port was in the works.

Exputer noted that as early as 2018, Square Enix and Tencent signed a letter of intent to “establish a strategic alliance”, and a few years later in 2021, then-Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said in a financial results Q&A that they “have some projects underway” with Tencent, but would not comment on any specific details. Final Fantasy 14’s mobile version may do well internationally, because mobile MMOs are popular in many regions, so bringing such a brand-name game to mobile phones and tablets will definitely be a big success.
The game’s latest expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Tracks of Dawn, was released earlier this month, and while the game has generally been well-received, it’s still experiencing some pretty big issues on Xbox. Fortunately, Square Enix has said it’s working on the issue, so you should be able to get back to playing the game as normal soon.
