The Zenless Zone Zero community is working on making Devil May Cry-style combos work

Zenless Zone Zero has been out for less than a week, and we’ve already seen countless players jump into training mode and try out all sorts of interesting routes to get a rich combo.

One such player, Midrush on Twitter, posted a video on the social media platform explaining the game’s juggling system and the importance of cancelling dashes and tagging squad members. The combination of these three can make for some pretty awesome clips. Then, there are players like Zettaslow, who used his understanding of characters like Lucy and Anby to show off a cool combo online that makes the most of both fighters’ gear.

Clearly, there’s something appealing about Zenless Zone Zero for those willing to take a look, as evidenced by the community of combo fans who flock to the game and post their findings on Twitter. That’s cool in and of itself, but the more interesting topic is why others are abandoning the game when there are such games out there. The answer is likely twofold: simply mixing up the effectiveness of much of the game, and the fact that the characters (and the assets they bring to combo potential) are locked behind Gacha.

With the current content in the game, players can absolutely just do basic combos and move on without paying too much attention to the complexities of combat. This is by design – as explained in a recent development discussion between the Zenless Zone Zero and Street Fighter 6 teams. While the depth may be there, it’s really deep. You have to dive in to find it. For those who are able to enjoy it on the surface, it may seem shallow.

Then there’s gacha. It’s no secret that the HoYoVerse is all about gacha to pay bills and build nuclear reactors. But the interesting S-tier characters are locked behind RNG, and much of the character development is locked behind Mindscape Cinema (where copies of characters unlock new abilities). Perhaps players can’t really experience the more exciting characters, and can’t see the combo potential of Zenless Zone Zero for themselves.
