The project lead for Fallout: London has confirmed that major mods will need to downgrade your copy of Fallout 4 to a version prior to the next-gen update released earlier this year in order for you to be able to play it. The reason given is that the next-gen version of Bethesda’s RPG is “not stable enough”.
If you’re not in the know, Fallout: London is a complete conversion mod for Fallout 4 that will let us explore a post-apocalyptic version of the British capital and include new factions and quests. The mod has been put on hold after the next-gen update for Fallout 4 forced its creators to abandon its original release date of April 23, and it feels like hell.

However, over the weekend, the development team of Fallout: London released a statement revealing that the mod is currently undergoing QA testing by GOG.com (the store responsible for distributing the mod), and is therefore only “awaiting final approval”. One detail mentioned in the statement is that the mod not only has its own installer, but also a downgrade procedure, and project leader Dean ‘Prilladog’ Carter has now revealed that the latter is definitely not just added as a cool optional extra, as you might think.
“GOG has been amazing throughout this. To be honest, we were the ones causing the problems,” Carter later explained in a post on the game’s Discord server (thanks, Ars Technica). “We had issues with our game due to the next generation of gaming. [update] Then you need a third-party update,” he continued, “and then you wait for them to fix it, and then at the last minute we find out that the next generation [version of Fallout 4]Even after the update, it is still not stable enough, so we will use the old version for now – [hence] The need for de-escalation.”
While this is an idea that Carter and the Fallout: London team have mentioned several times this year, many fans who do not plan to update the game to the next-gen version have been advocating for this to happen in order to avoid existing mods not working properly. However, London modders were hesitant to actually take action until May, as if they were still planning to release the game on the next-gen, then their workload would actually be doubled.
Sadly, that seems to be the reality they’re having to deal with. “The most annoying thing for us is having stuff, then stalling waiting for the next generation 3rd party fix. Then updating again, and it still doesn’t work,” Carter outlined in another post. “It’s really frustrating, and every setback requires starting the testing process all over again. That’s why we decided to go the downgrade route and update when the next generation fixes it. It’s an internal frustration because we now have to manage multiple things, which adds further stress.”
