Paying with a smartwatch is practical, but it’s not nearly as easy as using a cell phone. We’ll tell you which watches you can use to pay and what you need to bear in mind.
Carrying your wallet or cell phone with you when jogging is a nuisance. But it’s essential if you want to buy a bottle of water or a roll after your run, right? Not necessarily. Because with the right smartwatch, you can not only record your training performance, but also pay for your purchases after exercise. This works contactless via NFC, just like paying with your cell phone.
Which smartwatches can be used for contactless payments?
But while almost every mid-range cell phone now has an NFC chip built in and is therefore qualified for contactless payment, the situation is different with smartwatches. Only a few models have the technical requirements, and unlike the smartphone market, there are a lot of different payment services competing with each other.
You are usually tied to the service pre-installed by the watch manufacturer. While you can simply replace Samsung Pay with Google Pay on Samsung phones, this is not so easy on many smartwatches. So when you buy the watch, you have to pay attention to the payment service used and check whether it works with your bank.
Below we will tell you which smartwatches offer an integrated payment function and which service they use.
Apple
The Apple Watch has supported contactless payment since the first generation. However, this is only possible in conjunction with Apple Pay. The payment service from Cupertino does not work with every bank in Germany, but the most important banks, DKB, Deutsche Bank, Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken and Sparkasse, are on board.
Fitbit
Thanks to Fitbit Pay, you can make contactless payments with the following watches and fitness trackers. However, only a few banks are supported in this country. You can find an overview of all banks supported by Fitbit Pay here.
Garmin
Garmin offers contactless payment on over 40 smartwatches. An account with the company’s own payment service Garmin Pay is required. This only supports a few banks and payment service providers in this country – such as Klarna or Commerzbank. You can find a complete overview here.

OnePlus
Samsung
The following Samsung smartwatches support contactless payment:
However, an account with Samsung’s payment service Samsung Pay is required for this, with the only exception being that the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 also support Google Pay. Samsung Pay can be used with any bank account in Germany.
Xiaomi
You can pay contactless with the following smartwatches from Xiaomi.
Do I need an internet connection to pay with my smartwatch?
No. Your smartwatch only needs to have an internet connection when setting up the respective payment service. This is not necessary for paying. Accordingly, you can also pay with your smartwatch if you don’t have your cell phone with you and your smartwatch doesn’t have its own SIM card.
