Every summer, millions of Germans suffer from insect bites. A pragmatic but smart solution is Heat it. This gadget for your cell phone is cheaper on Amazon Prime Day.
- Heat it is a small gadget that plugs into the charging port of your smartphone.
- It relieves the itching and pain caused by insect bites by means of heat.
- The operating principle of the gadget, which costs between 30 and 40 dollars, is medically confirmed.
Who hasn’t experienced it: For the first time in a long time, temperatures have risen above 20 degrees. Many people use the sunny weather to relax by the lake or in the forest, for example. They are often prevented from doing so by annoying insects such as mosquitoes or wasps. One solution is the smart mobile phone gadget Heat it, which you can get for less on Amazon Prime Day.
The structure and principle of Heat it are actually quite simple. It is a small gadget designed as a keychain. It consists of two parts: a cover cap that goes on your keychain and the actual device, which has a USB-C or Lightning connector on one side and the ceramic heating element on the other. To use the device, first plug it into the charging port of the smartphone.

If you download the corresponding app and open it, Heat it will be recognized immediately. You can then set exactly how much and for how long the gadget should heat up. After the short heating period, you place the device on the sting site and wait until the treatment time (between four and nine seconds) has elapsed.
With Heat it you can treat your insect bites from mosquitoes, gnats, bees, wasps or horseflies using heat. The heat ing element of the small gadget heats up to between 47 degrees Celsius and 51 degrees Celsius. The nerves on the affected area of skin react to the heat impulse, which leads to a local overstimulation and ultimately reduces the transmission of stimuli, i.e. the itching.
Pain and itching relief through heat
The brief heat pain limits or completely prevents the transmission of itching and pain stimuli from the actual insect bite. The principle of action has been medically confirmed: The team behind Heat it says they worked with Prof. Maurer from the Charité Berlin to have the device clinically evaluated. The device works completely without chemical agents or batteries – the unpleasant itching is treated exclusively using concentrated heat.
The short-term heat pain caused by Heat it can be particularly unpleasant for more sensitive people. The manufacturer therefore gives the user control over how warm the device should be and how long the treatment should last. Thanks to the special children’s mode, in which the treatment temperature is reduced by 3 degrees Celsius, the device is also suitable for children from the age of four and adults with sensitive skin.
The manufacturer recommends independent use from the age of twelve. There are twelve different heating modes in total. The device’s battery consumption is minimal – up to 1000 treatments can be carried out with one battery charge. Heat it is available in two versions – one with an iPhone-compatible lightning plug and one with a USB-C plug for Android devices, as well as a version for the iPhone 15. There is also an adapter for devices with microUSB. Only the Android version is reduced on Prime Day.
The team behind Heat it
The device costs around 30 dollars (22 dollars on Prime Day!) for the Android version directly from the manufacturer or from Amazon and around 40 dollars for the iPhone version. The microUSB adapter costs an additional five dollars. The manufacturer cites the higher production costs and the additional components required as the reason for the additional cost of the iPhone version, as the Lightning or USB C connector is officially certified by Apple.
There is a great success story behind Heat it: A few Karlsruhe students came up with the idea in 2017 during a student competition. The startup from the Baden-Württemberg city has since grown to over 15 employees. The company is certified as a medical device manufacturer and produces the gadgets directly in Karlsruhe. Heat it is now available in over 15 countries around the world, and in 2022 the company had 250,000 satisfied customers.
What alternatives are there to Heat it?
The best-known alternative to Heat it is the insect bite healer Bite away, which is, however, built fundamentally differently than the small Heat it gadget. Bite away At 33 dollars, it costs about the same as the Android version of Heat it, does not require a cell phone or app, but is significantly larger and less portable than the competitor’s product. The principle of operation is the same, but it uses a battery instead of a rechargeable battery.
