Why not start your weekend off right by solving a word sort puzzle? We can help you with the Connections response for today, July 20.

If you’ve never played it, Connections challenges you to sort a group of 16 words into four groups where all the words are well… connected. This connection could come from the fact that they share a similar meaning, are part of a place name, objects found in a kitchen, or anything else really!

Although it may seem easy, the connection groups each have a different level of difficulty – yellow being the easiest and purple being the most difficult. Originally developed at the New York Times’ annual game jam, Connections was released in beta in June 2023. It has since become one of the most popular games featured by the NYTimes, second only to Worlde. Although some connections have been made to the BBC’s Only Connect program…

Hint for today’s Connections answer

Instead of jumping straight to the answer, let’s start with some clues for today’s Connections riddle:

  • YELLOW – Relating to what is easy.
  • Green – Carry out activities.
  • Blue – Provides energy.
  • Purple – Different ways to read Pop.
  • Natural belongs to the yellow group, sweat to green and juice to blue.

Remember: yellow is the easiest group to find, followed by green and blue, with purple being the hardest set of words to connect.

Without further ado, here is Connections’ response for today:

  • Effortlessly – Fluid, Graceful, Natural, Smooth.
  • Effort – Effort, work, sweat, work.
  • Energy for an electronic device – Battery, charge, juice, power.
  • What “Pop” Could Mean – Burst, Papa, Mainstream, Soda.

As someone who is constantly worrying about charging their devices, the blue group was the easiest to spot. Battery and Charge were the clues I needed to find my first group. The second was the yellow group. Now, after choosing Work, Labor, and Effort from the remaining words, finding the green group was easy, while the purple group came as a result of searching for all the others.

What to play after Connections?

The obvious answer to this question is Wordle, but if you’ve already solved that problem today, the New York Times has other games to offer. As for word-based games, the NYTimes offers Mini Crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Strands, which is still in beta. If you feel like taking a break from words, you can also try Tiles — a pattern-matching game — or Sudoku.

Outside of the NYTimes, there is Semantle, where you have to find the secret word by guessing its meaning. Spelling doesn’t matter in Semantle, instead you have to pay attention to the numerical value of your guesses to plot your way to the answer. If you prefer to stick to the Connections format, however, then it’s worth checking out Puzzgrid. There are hundreds of Connections-style puzzles there, but with only three minutes to solve them.
