News culture “We were in trouble” Hugh Jackman’s return was a coincidence: Wolverine probably saved Deadpool 3
Certain roles define you as an actor, so much so that they stick with you so much that they overshadow your other performances. Keanu Reeves will forever be Neo (Matrix) and John Wick. And the same goes for Hugh Jackman, who remains Wolverine many years after the release of the movie “Logan,” which was supposed to be his last appearance as a mutant. He finally decided to go back on his word and play this legendary character again in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and Marvel didn’t have to do anything to convince him.
The arrival of Deadpool in the MCU
Since Disney purchased 21st Century Fox in 2017 for the modest sum of $71.3 billion, fans have been waiting and dreading the return of the trashiest, most violent and funniest character from the Marvel stable to the cinema. We had to wait six years (Deadpool 2 was released in 2018) to see the addition of Wade Wilson to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This killer, played on screen by the rebellious and dedicated Ryan Reynolds, did not come empty-handed. In addition to the countless versions of Deadpool and several X-Men, it is the return of Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine that has fans excited. His comeback even saved Deadpool 3 in a way.
The happy return of Hugh Jackman
The addition of Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a dream come true for fans of this fictional character and/or the film universe created by Disney. However, it took some time for the project to come to fruition. We had to find THE right plot point to bring Wade Wilson back into the MCU, and Shawn Levy himself admits that the writers were in trouble before Hugh Jackman’s arrival. His desire to arrive in this universe as Wolverine changed the situation and gave Deadpool 3 a reason to exist, which then became Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel didn’t have to do anything to convince the actor. He went for it and actually made this film happen.
How did you get Hugh Jackman to reprise the role of Wolverine? How did you make sure he was willing to don the costume again?
That’s the crazy thing about this film. We didn’t ask him to come back. He called us. We wanted to do another Deadpool film, just with Wade Wilson and other characters. We were committed to finding a story that seemed special to us and that had a real reason to exist. One day in August 2022, Ryan’s phone rang and Hugh Jackman said, “I had an epiphany.” I want to see Wolverine with Deadpool. Can I come back? » He came to us and immediately our film had a goal, the centerpiece we had dreamed of: Deadpool and Wolverine. -Shawn Levy
