Games industry veteran Hideki Kamiya says he still wants to make sequels to PS2 classics Okami and Crimson Joey.
These days, Kamiya is probably best known as the creator of Bayonetta, though he’s made a slew of titles over the course of the year. You can’t forget Devil May Cry, of course, but he also created two other beloved titles: Crimson Joe and Okami. The former did get a sequel, but the latter’s Zelda-esque RPG did not, and this seems to have bothered Kamiya a bit, because in the second part of his interview with Ikumi Nakamura (who previously worked on Bayonetta), he talked about his desire to make Okami 2. “The story ended halfway through, so I felt sad to leave it like that,” Kamiya said.
“I believe that creators have a responsibility to create sequels that fans want to see. I may sound arrogant, but it’s been a while since I left Okami. But I still feel like I haven’t fulfilled my responsibility. So Capcom, please, let’s work on it together.” Even Nakamura herself said “please,” since Okami is another work she collaborated on with Kamiya – in fact, it’s her first time to have a role in a game. I’m not Kamiya or Nakamura, but I’m also excited to see Okami 2, Capcom!

In addition to Okami 2, Kamiya also mentioned a hypothetical Crimson Joe 3. While Okami recently appeared in a Capcom survey asking fans if they wanted a sequel, Crimson Joe did not appear in the survey. “It’s just because eight people played Crimson Joe,” Kamiya quipped. “That game was also finished, so I needed to finish it. The last survey Capcom did didn’t have Crimson Joe as an option, so I replied, ‘I’m Hideki Kamiya, let me make a sequel to Crimson Joe.'”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, his comments did not appear in the survey results. “The director himself asked for this game to be remade, but they don’t even talk about it. Capcom, what the hell is wrong with you?” Kamiya asked. “Where are my comments? They post other gamers’ comments like ‘Resident Evil was the first game I bought for PlayStation’ or ‘I’ve loved playing Mega Man since I was a kid.’ Those comments are important, but it would be even better if they mentioned me, too. Please hear me out as a director. I’m human. I’m a gamer, too. I want them to treat me as an equal, as a gamer.”
You can’t really tell the tone from the text, so I can assure you that he and Nakamura laughed together while discussing this, so Kamiya probably wasn’t that mad. Capcom should have let him make Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3 though.
