In summer it is very common in Europe go on vacation to the beach. This has been the case since the 60s and, although today there are more options than ever and travel abroad is on the agenda, the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations, not only by the Spanish, but also by foreigners, who are breaking attendance records. Although they are not the only destinations.
This trend of trying to spend the warmer months near the coast has been around for decades, and the changes that have occurred over the years overlap with this way of spending the summer. One example is the portable speakers, unfortunately increasingly common on the beaches of our country.
It’s also completely normal to see people with their cell phones on their towels, taking selfies on the shore or just talking on the phone. Knowing that it’s completely normal to go to the beach for long days, even all day, it makes sense to take our smartphone with us. But no matter how durable cell phones have become in recent years, they’re still technological devices that need to be taken care of
Don’t leave it in the sun
This is one of the most common mistakes people make when going to the beach. Cell phones are temperature sensitive devices, and direct sunlight clearly affects them. This is not just something that can be a problem on the beach, but everywhere.
What happens is that in an environment like the beach, the sun is a much more present element, since it is the reason why people usually go to these areas. So, It is better to use your cell phone under the umbrella or, if you use it in the sun, do it for a few minutes. Prolonged exposure can not only cause the temperature to rise and the phone to restart or turn off, but also damage the battery.
Cell phones are usually made to withstand specific temperatures, and in direct sunlight these can be exceeded. The same thing happens if we carry it in the car on the dashboard.where the sun shines. Or on the passenger seat if the driver is alone. You should always put it in the shade if you are not using it and use it in the same way whenever you can.
Be careful with salt water
Mobile phone manufacturers have been trying for years to ensure that their devices do not suffer when wet. This is something that has even become one of the characteristics of high-end models, such as those from Apple or Samsung. But it must be said that even for models with IP certifications, there are limits.
For starters, cell phones have these certifications out of the box, and daily use can cause them to no longer resist water or dust in the same way that we have been using them for a few months. But you should know that Anti-water certification refers to fresh waterno salt water or chlorinated pool water. This means that if any water with any element added to it enters the terminal, even sea salt, it could cause irreparable damage even if it has just been discharged. This is why it is not recommended to approach it too close to the water and to be very careful when taking photos on the shore or near the sea in a port or on a promenade.
Maximum brightness drains battery
One of the biggest changes to displays in recent years has been the increase in peak brightness. We’ve gone from panels that luckily hit 600 nits to others that occasionally exceed 4,000, and they’re capable of maintaining a brightness of 2000 nits continuouslyeven for short periods.
This makes it much better in the sun, and you don’t necessarily have to look for shade to answer a WhatsApp, but it also involves greater energy consumption. Therefore, if you use a mobile phone on the beach, doing it in the shade will help so that the brightness does not need to be as high as when used in direct sunlight. Shine is the cause of better drainage drumsespecially when pushed to the extreme, so we will have fewer hours of use available.
Sand can damage it
The last element to consider is sand. Cell phones are very sensitive not only to scratches caused by sand when we have them on the towel or put them in the beach bag, but also because the grains enter the charger or the hinge, in the case of a folding mobile. This is something we personally verified during our year-long test of foldable smartphones.
But even if we have a normal cell phone, it is possible that sand gets between the the phone and the case, so it is good to remove it and clean it before returning home. Of course, it’s not a good idea to leave it on the towel, as it would fill up with sand and be too easy to steal.
