If we had released Fallout: London when we originally planned, the game would have been completely broken after two days. Not just a little bit broken, it wouldn’t have loaded at all. You might as well have thrown it straight off the diskreveals Dean Carter, project manager of Fallout: London our colleagues from Metro.co.uk in an interview.

Since 2019, Carter and around 100 other hobby developers have been working on the most ambitious Fallout mod of all time. Fallout: London is intended to move the post-apocalyptic universe to a European open world for the first time, namely to England. But the mod took a pretty big hit when the next-gen update for Fallout 4 appeared more or less out of nowhere in April 2024.

This update brings some improvements to Fallout 4 on PC, but at the same time makes the mod unplayable because the code of the fan extension is no longer compatible with the original game. The result: Fallout: London had to be postponed spontaneously, even though it is almost finished.

But even regardless of this, there is a great deal of excitement about whether this mega-project can live up to expectations. And the developers in particular are feeling this thrill.

Next-gen update for Fallout 4 was a nightmare

The finished version of Fallout: London will not even attempt to work with the next-gen update. Instead, the download includes the option to downgrade to install an older version of Fallout 4, which will hopefully make everything work. Carter vents his own tension:

If the launch fails, we will bury ourselves and disappear from the face of society forever.

The statement is of course only meant figuratively and underlines what he explains further later in the interview: Fallout: London is incredibly important for the 100 employees. Many have firm plans to pursue careers as indie devs after the mod launch, so that they can earn real money with their own craft at some point (the mod is being released for free, after all).

The quality of Fallout: London is of course a key factor in determining how much enthusiasm you can put on your CV for the project. The mod is currently undergoing quality approval from GOG. According to Carter, this is the last step before the final release. We are therefore expecting a release in the coming weeks. And of course we are keeping our fingers crossed for the fans and the devs that Fallout: London delivers exactly what everyone is hoping for.
