Man, it looks like Disney is a little worried about the future of the Marvel Universe because it’s bringing back Robert Downey Jr…. but as fan-favorite villain Doctor Doom.
I’m in the UK, so when I went to bed last night I learned that Marvel’s Comic-Con panel was taking place, and I thought to myself “how bad can this be?” Considering Marvel hasn’t been in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con for a while, and the popularity of the MCU has been declining in recent years, it’s clear that the company is onto something big. Deadpool and Wolverine might have been promising a big start, but both Ant-Man 3 and Marvel’s Avengers were poor box office hits, at least compared to earlier entries in the franchise. So how does Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige plan to fix this? First, he’s bringing back the Russo brothers, directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, to direct the next few Avengers films.

Avengers 5 even has a brand new name, because yes, Marvel is no longer going the Kang route, as Jonathan Majors was accused of assault and harassment, which he was later found guilty of. Now, Avengers 5 will be called Avengers: Doom. Yes, that’s because Doctor Doom will be the main villain, as previous reports have pointed out – and he will also be the main villain in the next Avengers movie, Secret Wars. This is the second thing Feige did to get people back into the Marvel Universe – he brought back Iron Man/Tony Stark actor Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom.

I don’t know about you guys, but I think this is too gimmicky. Aside from being a somewhat creatively cowardly decision, there’s also the issue that a lot of fans wanted the Rom actor to play Doom, as it’s the character’s lineage and very important to his story. It’s clear that this is going to be some kind of multiverse drama, which is all Marvel has right now, so maybe this is a bit of a red herring, but it still feels like a pretty jarring decision.
Avengers: Endgame is currently scheduled to be released in May 2026, and Secret Wars will be released in May 2027.
