Astro Bot is getting his own game in September, but if you’re not sure whether to pick it up, some new gameplay tips might help you out.
In May of this year, PlayStation finally revealed the long-rumored sequel to Astro Bot, showcasing the game’s greatly expanded platforming action. A few previews of the game were released last month, which were generally quite good, and now it looks like a demo that media got to try out is currently available at ChinaJoy 2024. You can check out the gameplay below, which shows off a few levels, one of which is mainly a boss fight with a giant octopus monster. In this level, Astro picks up boxing gloves that allow him to extend his fists to fight enemies and cross huge gaps.
The second level does look challenging, being set in space and featuring cameos by Jak and Dust, who you have to rescue. The final level also looks difficult, involving some tricky platforming, and you have to rescue the player character from Journey. This apparently seems to be a quest that will run throughout the game, and considering there are over 150 classic PlayStation characters in the game, it looks like you’ll be facing a lot of difficult levels (although I’m guessing some of them are just cameos).

Overall, the game does look pretty good, which is reassuring because the demo that came with the PS5, Astro’s Playroom, was a lot of fun. The game was primarily meant to show off the PS5’s new features, like haptic feedback and triggers, but a full sequel will expand to over 80 levels. If the game catches your eye, you’ll be able to play it on PS5 later this year on September 6.
