Google Maps is no stranger to augmented reality. We can already use it to search and on hiking routes and now an additional function is added: augmented reality experiences.
With the help of Ubisoft and the support of Google Arts & Culture, augmented reality experiences allow you revisit the history of iconic monuments like the Eiffel Towerwho is the first to receive these experiences.

Google Maps already has an immersive view in more and more places and little by little we will find another type of special content hidden among the photos of a place: augmented reality experiences
You can try them out by searching for the Eiffel Tower gardens on Google Maps (not the Eiffel Tower itself, which offers an immersive view but no AR experience). Whether you’re there or not, you can enjoy the experience of playing in AR experience with Google Lens iconeven if you obviously have to be present for it to be an augmented reality and not a 3D representation.
In the case of the Eiffel Tower, you will find information about the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and the various proposals for modifications to the Eiffel Tower that came from the architects of the time. The great advantage is that in addition to reading about it, you can see them in 3D and move around the area to explore them from different angles. In each case, you also have a map to read more information on Google Arts & Culture.
What if you’re not in Paris right now? In that case, you can also access the information and 3D graphics to go back in time, even if presented as a tour in Street Viewso you can press arrows to explore the area, albeit in a less “augmented” way.
As we mentioned, these AR experiences start at the Eiffel Tower and “later, during the summer” they will expand to the Notre-Dame Cathedral and its surroundings in 1789a 3D reconstruction of the Bastille Saint-Antoine before the French Revolution or the Tuileries Palace before its demolition. Other content should be added in the future.
