Google’s most famous AI is Geminiarrived on mobile a few weeks ago with its corresponding application, and the possibility of replacing the traditional Google Assistant. However, it has not been a bed of roses for Gemini: in its role as assistant, it started with very few functions compared to Assistant. A few months later, it is currently gaining these features thanks to extensions.
Although it is the flagship of the Mountain View firm, Gemini is distributed in several models that adapt to different needs. And Gemma, also from Google, does exactly the same thing, but in an open perspective. Now, the search engine company is launching new models with Gemma 2
Gemma 2 expands with three new AI models
Google itself published a blog post for developers announcing the arrival of the new language models joining the Gemma 2 family. Gemma 2 arrived in Junebut now a few members focused on specific tasks have joined the group.
They are named Gemma 2B, Gemma Shield and Gemma ScopeThe promise of these LLMs is that they are more secure, accessible and transparent than most current models. Or at least that’s what the search giant claims, which differentiates Gemma from Gemini by publishing its source code.
We start with the review: Gemma 2B is the lightweight model of the family which stands out for its versatility. It is designed to generate text flexibly and can run on a wide range of hardware, from computers to peripherals.
Second, ShieldGemma acts as guardian against harmful content. Its goal is to detect hate speech, harassment, or sexually explicit content. Thus, developers can use this variant to filter queries that users make to a generative model, in addition to the generated content itself.
Third in line is Gemma Scope: a model programmed to explore the inner workings of the Gemma 2 models it uses. neural networks specialized, managing to break down all the information processed by Gemma 2. Basically, it has an investigative character, providing valuable insights into Google’s AI.
Even though these models will not reach our Android mobile (or at least not directly in the form of applications or services), they are important in an era where the debate on open AI models is gaining prominence in the industry: A preliminary report from the US Department of Commerce highlighted the benefits of open models, both for users and for small businesses and developers.
