- Warning: Spoilers for the Deadpool and Wolverine movie
No matter how much you know about Marvel, catching all the references in the Deadpool and Wolverine movie in a single viewing is nearly impossible. Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Kevin Feige and company have taken it upon themselves to dig into the deepest holes of cinema, series, comics and Pop Culture. In this sense, it is a work that deserves to be analyzed almost frame by frame.
While there is a lot to discuss, this time we want to focus on when Deadpool travels through the universes in search of a suitable Wolverine. We all know that the best one was the version of Henry Cavillbut there was another one that left many people as confused as they were terrified: who the hell is the crucified Wolverine?
The matter has lore and you have to dig deep into the history of comics to find the origin. The issue we are looking for is called Uncanny X-Men #251which dates back to November 1989. No less! In this story, Logan is captured, crucified and tortured by Donald Piercea villain depicted as a cyborg and enemy of the X-Men. He was portrayed by Boyd Holbrook in the film Logan.
A battered and bruised Wolverine hangs from a wooden cross outside the X-Men’s base camp. Wolverine’s captor Donald Pierce tortures a chained Wolverine, who begins to hallucinate. […] Wolverine witnesses the past. […] He is visited by the ghosts of several acquaintances, both friends and enemies. Uncannyxmen Description
The comic strips are particularly gruesome, as they show Wolverine deprived of food and water and exposed to the scorching sun. He couldn’t die because of his healing factor, so Pierce was able to torture him (more psychologically than physically) for as long as he wanted… or could. After several days, the sight of Storm on a rainy night gave him the strength to break free and call for help.
