Twitter may have changed its name a year ago, but you wouldn’t know it if you were using a Mac. While the iOS and Android stores moved from Twitter to X very quickly, on the Mac, the Twitter app was still available for download and generally worked. Some features, especially search, were wonky.
It seems the end is nigh. As of this week, searching for the Twitter app returns Telegram and a bunch of third-party apps that no longer work. There is also no X app and it is unlikely that there ever will be, as the X team did not seem to be aware of the existence of the Twitter app for Mac until very recently.
There is some good news: if you already have the Twitter app installed on your Mac, it still works, but for how long? The X team can disable access at any time, which would force Mac users to use X on the web.
Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X (or, as the media calls it, “X formerly Twitter”) in July 2023. However, despite most Twitter references and apps being rebranded under X, the Mac app retains the old logo and name. It’s now only a matter of time before it disappears forever.
