August is a predictable time in Apple’s calendar. In September, the company will unveil its new iPhone and Apple Watch, which will be accompanied by new versions of iOS/iPadOS and watchOS. Occasionally, other devices will also be announced, such as AirPods or iPads.
Betas for new operating systems are in full swing, and Apple has even started rolling out iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1, where Apple Intelligence will be available first. These betas will continue and become more sophisticated throughout August, as we approach the new OS versions in September. Here’s everything we can expect from Apple this month.
New Hardware Releases
It’s highly unlikely that Apple will launch anything new this month. The last time Apple launched something in August was back in 2007, when the aluminum iMac debuted. So yeah, it’s been a while.
But the wait won’t be long. September is when Apple will unveil its new iPhones and Apple Watches, so keep an eye out for rumors throughout the month. We’ve already seen plenty of rumors about the iPhone 16 lineup and Apple Watch Series 10, and those will intensify in August, as will subsequent hardware (iPads and Macs) that could be released in October. Here’s what we know so far:
iPhone 16: The iPhone 16 will feature a new processor, new colors, a vertical camera layout, the Action button, and a new Camera button. The Pro models will get a slightly larger display with even thinner bezels, faster charging, and better cameras, in addition to the new Camera button and a new processor. As the unveiling approaches, we expect more reliable leaks about the design and features.
Apple Watch Series 10:We don’t expect many major updates for the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, with one exception: the latest rumors indicate that the Series 10 will increase the screen size by a few millimeters, giving the larger model a screen size almost as large as the Ultra.
Application and software updates
Apple dropped iOS 17.6, iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, and macOS 14.6 at the end of July, along with dozens security vulnerabilities fixed.
Meanwhile, summer beta testing of iOS 18, macOS 15, and the other big fall operating system updates continues. Additionally, there’s a separate beta for x.1 versions, which bring the first set of Apple Intelligence features, but it’s only for devices that support AI.
iOS 18/iPadOS 18: We expect these new features to arrive around the second week of September, with new customization features for the Home screen, a major overhaul of the Photos app, new Messages features, RCS support, and more. Check out our iOS 18 superguide for a sneak peek.
macOS 15: Apple’s Sequoia upgrade brings iPhone mirroring, new video conferencing tools, new Safari features, the Passwords app, and a host of other features. Check out our macOS Sequoia superguide to learn more.
iOS 18.1/iPadOS 18.1: These betas introduce the first features of Apple Intelligence, currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPad M series. They will continue throughout August, bringing improvements and bug fixes, and even into September, as Apple prepares for a likely October launch. Once they are released, we expect all iPhone 16 models to be supported. Our iOS 18.1 guide has all the details.
macOS 15.1: For all Macs with Apple Silicon, this beta introduces the first features of Apple Intelligence, mirroring those available in iOS/iPadOS 18.1.
