Update [Sat 3rd Aug, 2024 03:30 BST]:
Nintendo recently launched a website in Japan with replays of the fastest times at the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. The same replay of ‘Donkey Kong Barrel Roll’ (which can be seen in the original story below) is featured on this page (thanks, OatmealDome). You can also watch this winning streak live in-game.
Original story [Thu 1st Aug, 2024 02:55 BST]:
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has been out for less than a month on Switch, and it looks like we’ve already gotten our first major tournament scandal. Although glitches aren’t actually allowed in this game, it appears that a player used one to top the leaderboard in the ‘World Championship’ Donkey Kong competition.
Individual with the highest score for ‘Donkey Kong Barrel Roll’ (with ‘WITH‘ rank and time of 00:15:68) used an “invisible scale bug” to set this scale record. We’ve reviewed the in-game replay and can confirm that it’s the winning streak.
There’s already been a lot of discussion on the internet, with one theory suggesting that the bug is within the game’s boundaries compared to certain other bugs, which aren’t allowed. Players have reportedly had mixed results trying to recreate the “invisible scale glitch” in this new Switch edition, with others claiming to have successfully replicated it.
You can see this winning run in the video post below (courtesy of ‘MetroidMike64’ on social media platform X):
So if you were miles away from this record time and couldn’t figure out how anyone accomplished this run in the first place, it was done by using an “invisible ladder glitch.” If this is directly related to Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, let’s hope Nintendo can push out an update to the game in the future to prevent this from happening again.
Nintendo has already released an update for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition at launch, unlocking ‘Survival Mode’ and also fixing ‘various issues’ to ‘create a smooth gaming experience’.
