The rumored mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 appears to be on the horizon, as it has just received approval for release in China.

Last month, it was reported that Tencent was developing a mobile version of the popular MMO Final Fantasy 14, and now it looks like that report has been confirmed. Niko Partners shared a report this week that China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) approved 15 imported games on August 2, including some pretty big titles. As Niko Partners puts it, “Tencent and Square Enix are developing a mobile game based on Final Fantasy 14 and have received approval.” Obviously, the wording there suggests that this will be its own game, rather than a direct port of the game.

Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners shared on his personal Twitter account that this mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 is “expected to be a separate MMORPG from the PC game,” so it doesn’t sound like you’ll be able to carry the Warrior of Light around in your pocket, at least not yet. When someone asked on Twitter if the game was finished, Ahmad further explained that it “should be nearly done,” but “it may be another 3-6 months before we hear from Square Enix.”

In addition to Final Fantasy 14, Tencent has also partnered with Koei Tecmo to develop a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8. Tencent will also publish several Nintendo games, Mario Golf: Super Dash and Paper Mario: The Origami King. NetEase has licensed Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals, and several Marvel games are expected to enter the Chinese market, the latter of which is being developed by NetEase itself. Finally, the Rainbow Six game has been approved for release on mobile and PC, and Niko Partners believes that this game is built for the 2025 Rainbow Six mobile game, which will be operated by Tencent.
