Spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine ahead.
There were a lot of surprise cameos in Deadpool vs. Wolverine, but perhaps the most surprising one was the one that made the actor “sick.”
While most of the Deadpools who get a lot of screen time in the multiverse version have appeared in the numerous existing Deadpools, there are also some parallel universe Wolverines. The most notable one is Henry Cavill’s Wolverine. He is obviously a big surprise because he is the Man of Steel (or was), not to mention his other works. In an interview with The New York Times, director Shawn Levy explained the origin of the casting and talked about how Cavill handled Wolverine’s classic cigar.

“Can I point out that Ryan cleverly named Henry Cavill’s Logan ‘Cavilllin’?” Levy began. “In the case of Henry, it was announced not long after everything ended at DC that Henry was being replaced as Superman. Given the cultural conversation Deadpool has been having, this felt like a great opportunity to firstly cast Henry Cavill in a role he can do so well, while also poking fun at another comic book-founded movie studio and playing with some self-awareness.”
The New York Times went on to note that despite Cavill’s brief appearance, his look as Wolverine is worth considering. Levy responded, “I think we all deserve consideration, including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had these nice muscles, but also had a cigar in his mouth the entire day of shooting. I remember hearing the next day that Henry felt sick because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but he never shook.”
It sounds like Cavill should have said “Hey, can I get a fake cigar here?”, but regardless, I’m sure his discomfort soon passed. Deadpool vs. Wolverine is entering its third weekend in theaters this week and is currently on track to cross $1 billion at the box office. This is obviously good news for Kevin Feige considering the MCU’s struggles after Endgame, but even without all that, it has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing the previous record holder… er, The Passion of the Christ. A win is a win!
