Advanced Data Protection is a feature introduced in iOS 16.2 that brought end-to-end encryption to nearly all iCloud features, greatly improving the privacy and security of Apple’s cloud services. Apparently, there’s a serious bug with this feature in iOS 17.6, as Apple has just released an iOS 17.6.1 update that specifically fixes an issue with it.
The release notes simply state:
This update includes important bug fixes and resolves an issue that prevents Advanced Data Protection from being enabled or disabled.
There’s no explanation of what other bugs might be fixed, but if Apple is talking about the Advanced Data Protection issue, it’s probably the most important.
Apple’s security updates page states “This update has no published CVE entries.” This does not mean that there are no security fixes in the update, only that the existing fixes were for issues not published in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database.
If you are using iOS 17.6, you should update to this version immediately.
