Treyarch has officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies, the much-anticipated turn-based zombie-killing action game that has been absent for several years. This isn’t just a new chapter in the Zombies series, it’s a fresh start in many ways.

While the story itself may be a continuation of the Dark Aether timeline from Black Ops Cold War, much of the gameplay, quality of life, and behind-the-scenes tweaks are all-new and should make for a rewarding experience for veteran players and newcomers alike.

Treyarch has revealed a series of updates coming to Zombies that will make the experience more fun, more customizable, and a marked improvement over all previous versions. As an internet connection is required to play Zombies, there are now a range of options to help with save and restore.

First up, Zombies now features private matches, meaning anyone can join a friend’s private game (provided there’s a room and the host allows it). More importantly, however, single-player players can now pause and save their matches, then load them up later to continue from where they (roughly) left off. In fact, the game will automatically save your match if you’re idle long enough.

When saving manually, you just need to make sure you are at full health and not downed or dead. You also cannot save after calling in an Exfil helicopter. Given that Zombies is now always online, this means that single-player players will not lose their progress if their internet – or Activision servers – experience any issues. For squad players, the game will now continue to run – as long as the host is active – allowing anyone who disconnected to rejoin and continue playing with their squad.

Black Ops 6 Zombies continues the high quality of life with a fully customizable HUD that you can change to match the traditional look (remove the minimap), or tweak each individual component. This means turning certain elements off/on, changing their colors, and more. One thing I’m particularly excited about is the ability to turn off the Pack-a-Punch weapon camo so that the weapons continue to look like weapons and not toys.

Zombies also supports third-person perspective for the first time, and you can switch to third-person view at any time, including which shoulder to aim from. All this and more will be available in Black Ops 6 when it releases on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 25.
