Almost 3 years after its launch on other systems, the magnificent Kena: Bridge of Spirits arrives on Xbox consoles
Video games are often considered works of art. And with examples like the one we have at hand, this statement is not without reason. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a video game developed by Ember Lab that was released on other platforms in September 2021. It generated a great impact on players thanks to its wonderful graphic and artistic section, without neglecting its playability. Today, in mid-2024, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is coming to Xbox consoles so all its players can enjoy its wonderful world. In the Xbox Community you can find out what we thought of this magnificent title. We begin.
Kena and the afterlife
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an action and exploration adventure, with hints of RPG and platforming. Our protagonist is Kena, a spiritual guide who must help all the souls of the deceased to rest forever in the afterlife. We find ourselves in front of a beautiful and simple story, which takes second place due to its gameplay and its combats.but despite this, it is followed with interest and is not bad at all.
Ember Lab’s work often leaves us speechless, as it mixes many mechanics from different genres, and does so in an extraordinary way for a video game developed by just over 15 people. Kena must explore an interconnected world of more than considerable size. In it we will find many alternative routes that will lead us to find collectibles, improvements and secrets. Exploration becomes a very important and rewarding part of the titlewhich, mixed with some platforming sections, with the use of jumps and double jumps, makes getting lost in its beautiful world a pleasure.
A beautiful, but very hostile world
A fundamental aspect of video games is their combat. This one is clearly inspired by soulslike so they won’t make things easy for us.. And the title is very demanding of the player, the slightest mistake can lead to certain death. Despite this, the fights are very rewarding and fun. At first it may seem a bit simple, where we only have weak combos, powerful combos, a shield, dodge and a bow, but as we advance in the adventure and improve our attributes, the possibilities increase significantly. The enemies are very well designed. We will have to learn their movement patterns to defeat them, bringing a dose of strategy, since we will have to find their weak points and attack at the right time.
A mechanic that we really liked is the use of Rot, cute little beings that will help us throughout the adventure. We can order them to perform different actions, such as moving various objects to solve puzzles, purify areas, or help us fight.. It is in this last section where these beings stand out the most, because if we fill a hit meter, they will help us perform powerful attacks and spectacular final moves.
A visual delight
Where Kena: Bridge of Spirits stands out the most is undoubtedly in its visuals. It’s a pleasure to see his world in motion, his palette of colors, the different characters… The work done by Ember Lab with just over 15 workers on staff is simply spectacular. The game is reminiscent of a Pixar movie but transformed into motion. All the sets are full of details, the characters are superbly cast and animated. In short, the visual part will leave you speechless. In terms of performance and bugs, in the Series X the title runs at 60 fps and very correctly. It is true that on some occasions, and especially during the cutscenes, we noticed some drops in fps, but nothing that tarnishes the whole.
The sound section also has a spectacular level. The melodies that play throughout the adventure are very beautiful and pleasant, making the events that occur in the game even more interesting. The sound effects are also very good and the English dubbing is done by very good voice actors. The game is subtitled in Spanish.
Conclusions
Kena: Bridge of Spirits arrives on Xbox after almost three years of exclusivity on other systems and we couldn’t be happier. It is true that the surprise effect that we had at the time has disappeared, but all the benefits of the title remain intact. From its phenomenal visuals, which are the best we have seen in the sector, to its frenetic combats, which will make us sweat profusely. Everything in Ember Labs’ work is of an exceptional level and is perfect to spend the hot summer days that we still have left. An adventure of approximately 10 hours, beautiful, stimulating, which will delight all types of audiences.
