The iPhone will support the implementation of a very precise offside detection system, called “Dragon”!
The iPhone will invade football fields, for a good cause. The Premier League is set to undergo an unprecedented technological transformation, thanks to the introduction of a new semi-automatic offside detection system based on a network of iPhones.. According to a WIRED report, these will be strategically located around the field as part of the smartphone-based system, known as “Dragon.”
This system which could replace the current VAR technologywhich has often been criticized for its slowness and occasional poor decision-making, involves using dozens of iPhones to capture high-speed video from multiple angles.
iPhone to clarify controversial Premier League decisions
The system developed by Genius Sports and Second Spectrum will use 28 iPhone models 14 and above, placed on stands around the field, capturing images at a speed of 200 frames per second.
This large amount of visual data will allow the system to accurately track player movementsquickly and accurately identifying if a player is in an offside position.
If successful, it is likely to expand to other leagues and competitions around the world.
According to WIRED, The “Dragon” system will be implemented from the 2024-2025 season of the English championship which begins this Friday evening with the match Manchester United vs Fulham at Old Trafford.

The growing integration of Apple devices into the world of sports is redefining the way we experience sporting events. Thanks to the capabilities of these devices, Sports companies embrace Apple technologies to deliver more immersive and personalized fan experiences
An example of the previous statement was confirmed by the images of the Slam Dunk Contest, held a few months ago. These prove that the NBA has been a pioneer in using Apple technology to improve the fan experience, with the implementation of Apple Vision Pro 3D cameras in games. And hopefully, these advances will affect other sports.
