With just a few weeks to go until its release in late September, the PC-exclusive strategy game Ara: History Untold is generating a lot of excitement among Xbox fans. In its latest video development diary, developer Oxide Games gives us a deeper look into the game’s development and, in particular, diplomacy, one of the most important elements of any great strategy game.

Diplomacy in Ara: History Untold is a key aspect of the game, and Oxide Games’ production director Satch Puri explains that when players controlling one nation encounter another nation in the game, they have several options to choose from. From giving a gift to the leader of the other nation to try to make friends, to building a road to the new nation or open or close borders between them. You can also propose trade and research agreements with a nation or even sign an alliance.

You need to measure your alliances and the steps to follow very well.

But diplomacy isn’t just about making friends. A new neighbor can also be publicly denounced, which could damage their reputation with other nations. Additionally, some leaders in the game have traits that can help with diplomacy. For example, Leopold I has a trait called Nestor of Europa, which allows the player to become more friendly towards other nations that they are not currently at war with.

Trade between nations is another interesting aspect of the game. Once a trade agreement is made between two nations, each country can immediately use the other’s resources. This adds a new level of complexity to diplomacy, as players must carefully consider the consequences of their actions.
